What is a CASA Volunteer?
A Court Appointed Special Advocate is a court-appointed, trained, and committed adult who advocates for a child’s best interest while the child is involved in the child welfare system. A CASA is basically a trained and caring adult who helps children who have experienced abuse or neglect by speaking up for them!
What does a CASA Volunteer Do?
CASA volunteers get to know the child and gather information from everyone involved in the child’s daily life. This includes family members, foster parents, teachers, daycare providers, doctors, lawyers, social workers and other important people involved with the
child.
CASA volunteers use the information gathered to report to the judge hearing the child’s case, to make sure the child’s needs are met while involved in the child welfare system.
Volunteers commit to representing a child’s best interests by making recommendations to address their needs until the child reaches a safe, permanent home.
What Are The Requirements?
1. CASA Volunteers must be at least 21 years of age;
2. Pass thorough background screening;
3. Complete 30 hours of pre-service training;
4. Be able to commit to a child until their case has closed, or for at least one year;
5. Be able to volunteer a minimum of 3-12 hours per month.
